Abstract
1,037,007. Driving steerable wheels. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Oct. 5, 1964, No. 40492/64. Heading B7H. The steerable wheels of a vehicle are driven through preferably homokinetic universal joints G and cardan shafts g, g<SP>1</SP> from a differential gear-box D which is arranged below the axis passing through the wheel centres to reduce the resistance to steering wheel movement when cornering due to the angularity between the stub axles x, x<SP>1</SP> and cardan shafts. Due to the differential, particularly if it is of the limited slip type, the driving load and hence effect on the steering is greatest for the inside wheel on a curve and by reducing the angle between the shaft g<SP>1</SP> and stub axle x<SP>1</SP>, the reduction in the effect on the steering due to the inside wheel is greater than the increase in effect due to the outside wheel, the stub axle x of which is at a greater angle to shaft g than with a normally placed differential gear-box D 0 (shown in broken lines) on the axis through the wheel centres giving a net reduction in steering effort.
