Abstract

103,699. Henson, E. L. Feb. 9, 1916. Conditioning fl o u rand meal; steaming or heating flour and meal; treating flour and meal with air and gases; processes of treating grain; conditioning grain; damping or steaming grain.-Consists of apparatus for drying or moistening grain or grain products, having means for supplying a current of hot dry air or of aqueous vapour to a falling shower of grain, flour, meal, bran, sharps, or other grain products in a closed chamber. The material enters from a shoot 1 and feedscrew 2 and is distributed by a rotary plate 36 in the chamber 3, the sides of which are cleaned by a scraper 37. The stream of fluid for treating the material enters by pipes 29, 32 near the bottom. Air is forced in by a fan F through a chamber 17, in which is a steam coil 18, and either escapes into the atmosphere by an outlet 35 or, if this outlet is closed, is drawn back to the fan through a pipe 34. To moisten the grain &c., steam is admitted to the chamber 17 by a pipe 26 from the steam-pipe 20, traps 30, 33 retaining condensed water, which is returned, with that from the chamber 17, to the boiler. The quantity of moisture added is ascertained bv means of hygrometers, thermometers, and a volume meter for the air &c. supplied, and is varied by controlling the speed of the fan F, a thermostat K in electrical connexion with a controlling-valve K<1> being provided to regulate the temperature. To dry the grain, steam is passed from the steam-pipe 20 through the pipe 19 to the coil 18, and the pipe 26 is closed. The air from the fan F heated by the coil 18 is forced into the chamber 3 and is discharged through the outlet 35. The amount of moisture removed can be calculated. At the bottom of the chamber 3 are scrapers 41 which discharge the material to a cooler consisting of a worm 10 within a casing 9, the outside of which is covered with absorbent material moistened by pipes 40a - - 40d and enclosed by a casing 38, through which air is driven by a fan F<1>.
