Abstract

A braiding machine for braiding a rope comprises two sets of spools one of which follows a circular path 4 and the other an elliptical path 6, Fig. 2 (not shown), the relative movement between the two sets being such as to produce the braided rope. The set following the circular path has each spool mounted on a carriage 19, Fig. 5 (not shown), having a rack the teeth of which engage pinions 20 driven by gearing 20, 24 and supported on plates 15, 16. A gap 17, 18 exists between the respective ends of the plates 15, 16 to permit the yarns from the spools describing an elliptical path to pass. The spools following the elliptical path are supported on the ends of arms 9, Fig. 6 (not shown), which are supported to revolve with a cross member 7. Simultaneously the arms 9 are rotated to extend the spools outwardly as they approach the axis Y and inwardly as they approach the axis X to ensure that they follow an elliptical path. Gearing is also provided to rotate the spools about their own axis as the cross member 7 is revolved.
