CORD-MAKING MACHINE.

I11 Letters Patent No. 897,680 granted to James P. Tolman and myself September 1, 1908, there is described a braiding machine. My present invention relates to an improvement thereon for I have found it can be improved by the elimination of certain of the motions described in said patent and also of the mechanism by which those motions are brought about. My improvement on that machine will be understood from the following description It is shown in its preferred form in the drawings in whichv Figure 1 is a plan of the table and the moving parts located about it.

As in said patent, A is a rotary table mounted on the upper end of the spindle C and resting 011 the hub of the fixed spur gear 8 whichis attached to the upper side of the plate E and serves as a bearing for the spindle C. This hub rises from the centre of the main frame plate E which is supported on legs E The spindle C may be rotated in any convenient way, as for example by bevel gears connected with a horizontal shaft carrying a pulley as shown in said patent.
The fixed spur gear 8 meshes with pinions 11 fixed on spindles which pass through the rotary table A and carry the supporting plates 12. Supported on the plate E and located above the rotary table A is an internal gear 24. which meshes with pinions 15 fixed on sleeves 1 1 which rotate on the spindles 10 and carry the fliers 20,- 21, and also carry on brackets 18 bobbins 19 from which these strands 193 are carried through the fliers to the central braiding point. The vertical extensions of the fliers 21 pass through the openings 13 in the supporting plates 12 which are so shaped and located that as the plates 12 and fliers 21 are rotated in opposite directions at the proper speeds the fliers at the proper time pass through the openings 13.

The revolving plate A causes the twist to the cord and the pinions 11 and 15 meshing with fixed spur gears and fixed internal gear respectively cause the supporting plates 12 and fliers 21 to revolve in opposite directions thus allowing the passage of the fliers 21 around the other set of bobbins 222. It will be seen from the above description that, as in said patent, each of the strands 193 from the fliers 21 is interlocked with adjacent strands 223 from the other set of bobbins 222 and each of the strands 223 from said bobbins 222 is interlocked with adjacent strands 193 from the fliers 21, so that the strands are united into the same common fabric, while during the braiding operation the entire body of strands is twisted by'the revolving of table A,as in said patent.
Also, as in said patent, the table A may be made stationary in which case the gears 8 and 24: will be caused to revolve and the necessary twist to the cord 'be imparted by revolving of the braiding point or the winding mechanism by which the cord is wound after it has been braided.
It will be seen from the description that the method of supporting the bobbins 222 together with the lengthening of the fliers arms avoids the necessity of revolving the bobbins 22 with relation to the fliers thus simplifying the construction of the machine and making possible an increase of speed.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A braiding machine of the kind described having separate sets of strand supplies, the strand supplies of one set being located alternately with the strand supplies of the other set about a common axis, means for rotating both sets of supplies in the same direction, one of said sets having supports and being rotated as a unit and the other set comprising bobbins and fliers and means for rotating said fliers about adjacent bobbins, said supports comprising rotary disks, each having openings adapted to register with the adjacent fliers as they rotate.
2. A braiding machine of the kind described having separate sets of strand supplies, means for rotating both sets in the same direction about a common centre, one set comprising bobbins with attending fliers and the other set comprising bobbins, means for rotating each of said bobbins with attending flier of the one set, a mounting for each of the bobbins of the other set, said bobbins of the respective sets being so relatively arranged that the flier attending each bobbin of the one set will pass around adjacent bobbins or the other set during the operation of the machine, said mountings for the bobbins of said other set each having grooves therein, and rotary members adapted to rotate in said grooves for supporting said mountings, said rotary members having gaps therein adapted to register during the rotation of the members with the paths of adjacent fliers whereby said adjacent fliers will pass around said mountings and bobbins carried thereby during the operation of the machine.

A braiding machine of the kind described having separate sets strand supplies, means for rotating both sets in the same direction about a common centre, one set comprising bobbins with attending fliers and the other set comprising bobbins, means for rotating each of said bobbins with attending flier of the one set, a mounting for each of the bobbins of the other set, said bobbins of the respective sets being so relatively arranged that the flier attending each bobbin of the one set will pass around adjacent bobbins of the other set during the operation of the machine, said mountings for the bobbins of said other set each having grooves therein oppositely arranged, rotary members adapted to rotate in said grooves for supporting said mountings, said rotary members each having gaps therein adapted to register during the rotation of the members with the paths of adjacent fliers whereby said adjacent fliers will pass around said mountings and bobbins carried thereby during the operation of the machine, and means for rotating said supporting members in a direction reverse to the direction of rotation of said bobbins with attending fliers.
4. In a braiding machine, two sets of bobbins mounted concentrically and means for rotating said sets in the same direction, the the mounting for each 01" the bobbins of one set comprising a rotatory spindle having a sleeve to which said bobbin is attached, said sleeve also carrying a flier, means for rotating said sleeve, each spindle having a disk mounted on its upper end to rotate therewith, said disks having openings through which the fliers may pass as they rotate, the mounting for the other set comprising plates each mounted between two of said disks whereby they Will be properly spaced apart and supported.
