In machines for braiding cord various arrangements have been provided for giving to the strands the necessary movement to interlock the threads and: produce the desired braid. Most of these machines, however, have beenvery complicated, hence expensive to build and to maintain. The pur. pose of my present invention is to simplify, so far as seemsnow possible, the arrangement. of thebobbins and the means for giving them their necessary movement. Machines of this-character heretofore have been quite compact intheir arrangement of bobbins'so that they could receive only bobbins oflimiteclisize, One feature of my invention is such an arrangement of parts, without increasing materially the diameter of the machine as a whole, that, because of the dis tance between the bobbins, very much larger bobbins can be used then heretofore upon a machine Ofi comparatively small dimensions, and hence the bobbins must be replaced less frequentlythan heretofore,
Myiimprovement will be understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shownin its preferred form.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged section showing the means for supporting bobbins of the upper tier.
In the drawings, 1 is the frame which may be of any convenient shape to support acentralstud2 at its lower end. To the upper end of the frame is attached an internal gearv 3. About the stud2 is mounted a sleeve 4 which rests onthe frame and has a flange Beneath the flange 5 is carried a beveled gear G'kBYGdbQllllfi sleeve and in mesh with abeveled'gear 7 on the end of the shaft 8 by which. power is applied to rotate the sleeve. The sleeve carries a lower table 9 which is bolted to the flange 5 and rotates withit and on which are mounted frames 10 for the bobbins. As shown there are six frames each having. projections 11 at its bottom between A which is hinged by a pin 15 a spindle 12 on which is carried the bobbin 13. The spindlBS 12 maybe turned outwardly about thepin 15. to remove and replace the bobbins 13. In line with each spindle 12 is a vertical tube 16 through which the strand (1 from one of the bobbins 13 of. the lower tier is led upward toa point sufiiciently high to deliver the strand a without interference with thestrand bwhich comes from the upper bobbin.
The bobbins 1? in the upper tier are mounted on travelers. lilach'traveler comprises two shoes. 19' and 199 connected by a neck 181. Above the upper .shoe 190 is carried a spindhi18 which serves. as a. support and axis for thebobbins 17. The lower shoe 19 is supported tobe moved inthe cam grooves. in the camv plate 20. llhe upper shoe 190 runs in passages 32 in the upper cam plate 326) which passages register with the cam grooves in cam plate 2Q. This cam plate 20, has in it av cam. groovethe shapeof which. will be understood from Eig. 4'; It Wlllrbfi noted that there is a ortion 21 of the cam. groove which, is annularand runs around near. the edge of-the plate. There are six grooved loop portions122, eachof which is substantially concentric with. a tube. 16 andgroovesQB whichconnect these loop portions as shown in that figure.

In the same way as it passes half. way around. the loop 22 it will; be directed by the projection25. intothe connecting portion 23and passing along that portionwillcome back into .the groove 21 again and round through the next loop 22, etc. The shoes 190* are moved in like manner through the passages. 32in the upper cam plate. Each bobbin 17 will thus be moved by a continuous path through. the various portions of these cam grooves and. in passing through the loopportions of this groove will pass around a tube lfiso that the thread 0 coming. from this uppertier of bobbins will be interlocked with thethread a coming from the lower tier thereof, the threads from the two sets ofbobbinsbeing led up to the braiding point as usual.
Each tube 16 is threaded at itsbottom to receive a nut 160 and has a collar 161 tast thereon to rest on the top plate and bind the tube in place. The tube serves as an axis for the gear 27 which rests on the cam plate.
The top cam plate 320 (see Fig. 2) 1s sectional, having passages 32 registering with the grooves in the bottom cam plate 20, its sections being supported by the tubes 16, the sleeve 4 and rods 31 threaded 1nto the cam plate 20 respectively. In it run the upper shoes 190. The travelers carrying the bobbins 17 are caused to travel through these cam grooves in the following manner: There is mounted on the sleeve 1- to turn thereon a gear 26 and between the periphery of this gear and the internal gear 3 are a series of gears 27 located equidistant apart and which are in mesh both with the central gear 26 and the internal gear 3. Each gear 27 rotates about a tube 16 as an axis and has a hub which rests on the cam plate 20, rotating with the sleeve 4 of which it is a part. It gives to the tubes a rotation as a unit about the stud 2, and this rotation carries also the gears 27 which in turn are given an independent rotation about the tubes 16 because they mesh with the stationary internal gear 3 and together cause the rotation of the central gear 26.
It will be noted that the gears 27 have in them recesses 28 and that the internal gear 3 and the central gear 26 are interrupted at certain points by recesses 29, 291 which register at times with the recesses 28 in the carrier gears 27. Attached to the under side of the gears 27 and below the level of the internal gear 3 and of the central gear 26 are dogs 30, one located on each side of a recess 28. The travelers and their bobbins, of which there are six in the machine shown, and these dogs are located in such position about the gears 27 as to engage in their rotation the necks 181 of the travelers and carry the travelers around the gears 27, the shoes 19 serving with the grooves to direct the line of movement of the bobbins. Thus each traveler is carried by gears, being guided by the shoes 19, 190, so thatits neck 181 is deposited by one carrier gear in a recess 29 in the internal gear. It is then taken out of this recess by the next carrier gear, which reaches it in the rotation of the cam plate 20 and carries it to and deposits it in a recess 291 in the central gear 26, from which it is removed by the third carrier gear as it reaches it and again carried and deposited in a recess 29 in the internal gear. During these movements of the upper tier of bobbins the lowor tier of bobbins on the lower plate 9 is rotated about the shaft 2.
Thus the strands from the lower tier of bobbins will be braided with the strands of the upper tier, the strands of both tiers bemg consolidated into a solid braided cord at the braiding point as is usual in this class of machines.
As other arrangements of mechanism embodying my invention will occur to those skilled in the art, I do not mean to limit my invention to the exact construction shown.
It will be noted that in this machine there are no fliers, the upper set of bobbins being guided about the strands from the lower set of bobbins by cam grooves, although other ways of accomplishing this result may occur to those skilled in the art.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A braiding machine of the kind described having two sets of bobbin supports, an upper set and a lower set, each support carrying a bobbin, each set of bobbins supplying strands to be interlocked, means for supporting and rotating each set of bobbins as a unit and about the same axis in the same direction, the support for the upper set of bobbins having openings therethrough to allow the passage therethrough of strands from said lower set of bobbins, and means for giving each individual bobbin of said upper set a movement progressively about strands leading from a plurality of bobbins oi the lower set whereby all the strands from the upper set of bobbins ;will be interlocked with the strands of the lower set of bobbins.
2. A braiding machine of the kind described, having two sets of bobbin supports, an upper set and a lower set, each support carrying a bobbin supplying strands adapted to be interlocked, means for rotating each set of bobbins as a unit about the same axis in the same direction, the support for said upper set of bobbins comprising a cam table having cam grooves, means for moving said upper set of bobbins in said cam grooves and means mounted to rotate with said cam table but stationary with relation thereto whereby the threads from the lower set of bobbins may be delivered above said cam table and strands of the upper and lower bobbins will be interlocked.
A braiding machine of the kind described having two sets of bobbin supports, an upper set and a lower set, each support carrying a bobbin supplying strands adapted to be interlocked, means for rotating each set of bobbins as a unit in the same direction about the same axis, the support for said upper set of bobbins comprising a cam table having cam grooves and means for moving said upper set of bobbins in said cam grooves whereby strands of upper and lower bobbins will be interlocked, said upper bobbin-moving means comprising a series of carrier gears mounted in said cam table to move as a unit therewith and having means to engage and move said upper set of bobbins and means to rotate each carrier gear about its own axis comprising a central gear and a stationary internal gear, both in mesh with said carrier gears, whereby the rotation of said cam table will cause the rotation of said carrier gears individually and enable them to pick up, move and release said upper set of bobbin supports, the path of travel of said upper set of supports being guided by said cam grooves.
4:. In a machine of the kind described, a lower rotary table, a series of bobbins mounted thereon, an upper rotary cam table having tubes mounted therein whereby to lead strands from said lower table, means for rotating said tables in unison in the same direction, an upper set of bobbins mounted in said cam table and means for moving each upper bobbin about said tubes progessively whereby the strands from said upper bobbins and those from said tube will be interlocked.
5. A braiding machine of the kind described having two sets of bobbin supports, an upperset and a lower set, each support carrying a bobbin supplying strands adapted to be interlocked, means for rotating each set of bobbins as a unit about the same axis in the same direction, the support for said upper set of bobbins comprising a cam table having cam grooves and means for moving said upper set of bobbins in said cam grooves whereby strands of upper and lower bobbins will be interlocked, said upper bobbin-moving means comprising a series of carrier gears mounted in said cam table to move as a unit therewith and having means to engage and move said upper set of bobbins and means to rotate each carrier gear about its own axis comprising a central gear and a stationary internal gear, both in mesh with said carrier gears, whereby the rotation of said cam table will cause the rotation of said central gear and said carrier gears individually and enable them to pick up, move and release said upper set or" bobbin supports, the path of travel of said upper set of supports being guided by said cam grooves.
