Abstract

Wool, especially unwoven wool, is dyed with wool dyes in the presence of quaternary ammonium salts derived from condensates of 4-70 mols ethylene oxide with primary aliphatic monoamines having 12-25 carbon atoms from a dyebath which contains the said dye and quaternary levelling agent and (a) 20-150% on the weight of levelling agent of paraffin oil, (b) 5-25% on the weight of paraffin oil of an emulsifier therefor and (c) at least 0.1% on the levelling agent of a silicone antifoaming agent. Suitable dyes are acid dyes, reactive dyes, metal complex dyes of the 1:1 and 1:2 type with and without acid solubilising groups. The levelling agents may be quarternated with known agents especially dimethyl sulphate. The emulsifier (b) may be a known polyglycol ether derivative containing 2-9 ethylenoxy units of oleic acid, oleic acid sorbitol ester or oleyl alcohol or it may be oleyl alcohol itself. The dyebath may further contain a dispersant, e.g. sodium dinaphthylmethanedisulphonate, and a solution promoter, e.g. isopropanol. Examples are given.
