Abstract

1,033,592. Feeding sheets. C. J. HEYWOOD. May 10, 1965 [Feb. 12, 1964], No. 5983/64. Heading B6B. An apparatus for sensing the position of a sheet, a light source 3 or other source producing an electromagnetic beam 2 is arranged at the same side of the sheet as a photoelectric cell 8 or other detector which receives the reflected beam 7, and a reflector 5 is arranged on the opposite side of the sheet, whereby the sheet can interrupt the beam 2 or the reflected beam 7. The sheet (not shown) is advanced over a table 1 beneath a smoother plate 6 towards an aligning stop (not shown), and the reflector 5, which is a narrow chamfer on the end of the plate 6, is obscured by the front edge of the sheet if the latter is correctly positioned and aligned. If the reflector 5 is not obscured at the appropriate moment, the printing or other sheet processing machine to which the apparatus is applied, is stopped. The apparatus can also include sensing means to detect errors in side registration of a sheet. In modifications, the light source 3 and detector 8 can be interchanged, or the detector and light source can be arranged above the table 1 and the reflector 5 below the table.
