Abstract
A sintered high density W and/or Mo base alloy is formed from a powder mixture of W and/ or Mo and 0.01-10% by weight of at least one of the Pt group metals, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt, and optionally up to 10% of Re the mixture being pressed and sintered at 900 DEG -2000 DEG C in a non oxidizing atmosphere. The Pt group metal may be added to the mixture either as a powder of the metal with a particle size up to 50 microns or as a solution of the metal salt e.g. aqueous solution of palladous chloride in which case the wet mixture is dried and then heated in hydrogen to reduce the salt to palladium. Examples are given of W and Mo powders of an average particle size of 1 micron and 5 microns and the W and Mo may be added as a prealloy or mixed separately or together with the Pt group metal. The mixture is compacted at 20-50 tons per sq. inch, presintered at 600 DEG -1000 DEG C and sintered in argon on preferably hydrogen.
