An apparatus for liquid treating textiles or washing laundry comprising a number of treatment chambers 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>2</SP>, 5<SP>3</SP> through which the material is intermittently advanced in counter direction to the flow of the treatment liquid, the chambers are formed in an horizontal, rotatable drum by means of perforated walls and may be intermittently bought into communication so that, when the drum is in a particular angular position, material is transfered from one compartment to the next by gravity. In Fig. 1 the drum is split by a plane through it axis into two axially, movable halves. Material 7 is introduced in direction 8 whereupon the top half of the drum is moved to the right to enclose the material. After the drum has been rotated to carry out the treatment it is stopped with its movable half in the lower position. This half is shifted to the left to shift material along by one compartment. The drum is then rotated through half a revolution and a door 12 opened so that the treated material may fall into a carrier 10 to be taken away. In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown) each drum half is mounted on one half of a rotatable shift which is split by a plane passing through its axis. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a compartmented drum 15 has doors 17 provided in the dividing walls. These doors may have the openings in the walls or be opened (as shown) to provide sloping shoots. By opening the doors and rotating the drum in the right sequence the material may be intermittently moved through the chambers. Inlet and outlet doors 18,19 are provided. Ribs are provided on the inside walls of the chambers 1 to tumble the material. Adjacent compartments may be separated by a space 75 (Fig. 10, not shown) into which treatment liquids or chemicals may be introduced.
