Abstract

1,031,397. Bearings. C. S. WHITE. Feb. 23, 1965 [Feb. 24, 1964], No. 7756/65. Heading F2A. [Also in Division E2] A bearing material comprises a woven &c. cloth having a bearing surface formed of fibres, filaments or threads consisting predominantly of a low-friction organic polymeric material in a matrix layer which has a hardness greater than that of the fibres etc.; the matrix layer being of such thickness that portions of at least some of the fibres are exposed through said layer at the bearing surface or are so thinly covered by said matrix layer as to be exposed by wear of said layer after a short period of sliding contact thereof with another surface. The fibres may be made of polyfluorocarbon or of P.T.F.E. The matrix layer comprises a thermosetting resin, such as phenolic resin; may contain a finely divided heat-conductive material, such as graphite; and may contain a finely-divided heat-resistant reinforcing material, such as asbestos. In an embodiment, the back surface of a cloth 4, Fig. 2 (not shown), is coated with a thin layer 7 of bondable resin, preferably phenolformaldehyde in its " B " state. The coating 7 is thin and bonds with fibres 6 in the cloth. The front surface of the cloth 4 is coated with a thin layer 8 of material which forms the matrix between fibres 5. The layer 8 penetrates so as to be bonded to the coating 7 and is sufficiently thin so that areas 9, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), are left exposed or a very thin coating is provided at positions 10, Fig. 2 (not shown). The layers 7 and 8 may be of the same material providing it is bondable. In making bearings, the bearing material may be bonded to a bearing member before or after a bearing member is formed to shape. Phenolic resin can be pressure-moulded against the back surface of the cloth so as to cause the front surface of the cloth to conform to the surface contour of the bearing member.
