Abstract
1,031,319. Discharge apparatus. BENDIX CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 45603/64. Heading H1D. A bi-stable visual data display device comprises a source of primary particles, a channel electron multiplier, at least one control dynode, a fluorescent screen, and a pulse source connected to the dynode for applying a first positive pulse permitting electron transmission to the screen and a second negative pulse to stop this electron transmission. As shown, the device comprises an array 6 of channel multipliers of the kind described in Specification 950,640 associated with a radio-active electron source or having a residual gas pressure sufficient to support a gas discharge. The device further comprises two arrays 8, 9 of control dynodes connected, respectively, in rows and columns separated by insulating sheets 18, and an array of auxiliary electrodes 10 which control the electric field near phosphor screen 12. Biasing voltages of -1000, 0, + 10, + 15, + 100 and + 5000 volts are applied respectively to the ends of multiplier 6, control dynodes 8, 9, auxiliary electrodes 10 and screen 12, but are insufficient to cause electron multiplication at dynodes 8, 9 and consequent electron transmission to screen 12. Electron transmission through one or more matrix elements is initiated by application of a + 50V. pulse to at least one row of dynodes 8 and one column of dynodes 9. This electron transmission then continues until a negative pulse, e.g. - 50V., is applied to control dynodes 8, 9.
