Abstract

1333636 Matrix displays INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 56899/71 Heading G5C Drive circuitry applying cyclic sustain signals to crossed orthogonal sets of parallel conductors H and V the crosspoints of which define cells of a gas discharge display panel is arranged to apply sustain signals to adjacent conductors of a set differing by a phase such that the net effect of charge migration between adjacent cells is reduced. Horizontal line drivers 21-24 selected by a circuit 13 are connected alternately in pairs to sustain drivers 27 and 27<SP>1</SP> which receive control signals from an erase and write control circuit 60 whenever an erase or write operation takes place and at all other times perform sustain operations in response to signals on lines 33 and 33<SP>1</SP>. Vertical line drivers 41-44 are similarly connected. The horizontal sustain signals X 1 and X 2 applied to adjacent lines H 1 and H 2 by the drivers 27 and 27<SP>1</SP> are rectangular waveforms 180 degrees out of phase with respect to each other. The vertical sustain signals Y 1 and Y 2 applied to adjacent lines V 1 and V 2 from drivers 55 and 55<SP>1</SP> are similar rectangular waveforms 180 degrees out of phase with respect to each other and 90 degrees out of phase with respect to the corresponding horizontal drive signals X 1 and X 2 . The wall charges acquired by adjacent cells are such that only half of the charged particles, i.e. only electrons or only positive ions, in a fired cell are attracted to an adjacent unfired cell. The panel includes pilot cells (not shown).
