Abstract

1340456 Cathode ray display tubes MULLARD Ltd 31 Aug 1972 [8 Feb 1972] 5789/72 Heading H1D A display device suitable for alpha-numeric display comprises an array of selectively controlled photo-cathodes the emission from which is amplified by a channel multiplier and fed to a luminescent screen, optical feedback being provided from the screen to the cathodes so that a pattern remains displayed until altered. In the arrangement described the cathodes form a 7 x 5 rectangular array, and each cathode is mounted on a metal substrate provided with an individual input connection and disposed in a shallow cavity in an insulating block. If a photo-cathode is at a potential equal to or more negative than the input surface of the multiplier, its emission (stimulated initially by stray electrons and/or photons) will cause the illumination of a picture point on the screen; if the potential of the cathode is raised 2-5 volts positive its emission is unable to reach the input of the multiplier, and the cathodes may be switched by means of integrated circuits. A cross-bar addressing system may be used if the channels in the multiplier are connected together in rows whilst the cathodes are connected together in columns. A colour display may be provided by using discrete phosphors of different colours for the luminescent screen.
