Abstract

1368753 Electron multipliers MULLARD Ltd 19 May 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37913/71 Heading H1D In an electron multiplier comprising a number of channels inclined at an angle, e.g. 13 degrees, to the axis of the multiplier, the conductivity of the surface of each channel is greatest in the region of maximum inclination and least in the region of small or zero inclination. In one example the channels are of square section with two sides inclined to the axis having high conductivity and secondary emission, and two sides parallel to the axis having a low conductivity so that they do not distort the equipotential lines which remain substantially parallel to the end surfaces of the multiplier. In a further example the channels are of hexagonal section with two sides parallel to the axis of low conductivity and the other four sides of high conductivity. Electrode processing.-A square section channel is formed from four parallel glass strips of either rectangular or mitred section and formed either of a single piece of glass or as a laminate of two different glasses. Opposed strips are identical, and adjacent strips may have a composition which is similar but differs in that the surface conductivity is very different after the material has been subjected to chemical reduction. A single channel may be drawn down, but preferably several are assembled and drawn down together to facilitate correct alignment. After producing a boule of parallel fibres, the boule is sliced at the required angle, the cores (if any) are removed, the conductive surfaces are provided in the channels (for example by chemical reduction), and input and output electrodes are provided on the faces. The multiplier may be used in an image converter or intensifier tube, a camera tube, or a display tube.
