Abstract

Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses for hand-grenades, in which a striker is mounted upon a perch in such a way that either the striker or the perch is displaceable on impact, and consists in making either member unsymmetrically weighted to increase the sensitiveness. In the construction shown in Fig. I., the striker 1, weighted laterally at 2, is mounted upon a perch 5 and is normally looked at safe by a spring-pressed " thimble " 4 and pin 6, the member 4 being engaged by an external hand-lever 7. On impact, the fuse having been previously armed by release of the lever 7, the striker slips off the perch and is impelled by the spring 3 against a rim-fine percussion cap 11. In a modification, the striker is provided with a match-head, which is adapted to be ignited by rubbing against a layer of composition on the part 12. Fig VII. shows a further modification in which is employed a movable perch consisting of a ball 19, one side of which is hollowed out, the ball being interposed between the striker 1 and the cap 11. In the construction shown in Fig XVII.. the striker 1 is normally locked by a detent or perch, on one side of which is attached a semi-cylindrical weight 28. A " thimble " 29 together with a pin 6 constitute a safety device. A modified form of the con struction shown in Fig. XVII. is also described in which abutments projecting from the body o the grenade may be provided on either side of the striker, so as to form fulcra about which the detent may swing laterally.
