Abstract

1,028,242. Heating weds in fluidized beds; drying weds. BRITISH PAPER & BOARD INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Jan. 11, 1963 [Jan. 18, 1962], No. 1972/62. Addition to 992,577. Headings F4G and F4U. In the method and apparatus described in the parent Specification wherein the wed A of material to be heated or dried passes vertically upward through a bed of sand or ballotini fluidized by a primary stream of air or superheated steam introduced through inlets 7, 8 in an inner region 15 adjacent the wed, and by secondary, slower streams introduced through a porous floor 9 from pressure boxes 10 in outer regions 13 remote from the wed, the fluidized particles are more widely dispersed in the streams in the inner region at each side of the wed than in the outer region. The regions are formed by spaced vertical baffles 14 on either side of the wed, which have horizontally extending projections 16 on their inner faces to form constrictions adjacent the wed so that the wed is dried by passage through substantially independent pockets of fluidized particles between the projections. The topmost baffles 14 have outwardly curved extensions forming exhaust ducts 19 for particles travelling with the wed to be passed downwardly through the regions 13 for heating by tubes 12 and recirculation via shuttered opening 22 at the lower edges of the baffles 14. The casing of the apparatus is formed of separable halves adapted to be fitted together in the plane of the path of movement of the wed by a piston and rod power means.
