1,102,760. Drying webs; heat treatment in fluidized beds; heating granular materials. BRITISH PAPER & BOARD INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 28 Sept., 1965 [28 Sept., 1964], No. 39514/64. Headings F4G and F4U. In apparatus for drying web material A in a fluidized bed, the particles of the bed are fiuidized between baffles 12 by gas from two primary and two secondary gas inlets 7, 9 in the lower section of a container 1, and are heated in a chamber 13 at each side of the baffles 12 in two stages formed by a first heating chamber 28 including baffles 50 . . . 55 through which the particles descend in countercurrent flow to hot gases derived from a second heating chamber 38 in which the particles are heated in co-current flow to hot gases from a burner 26. Any particles carried upwardly with the web are directed by curved deflectors 29 into the upper portion of each first chamber 28 and the gases are exhausted therefrom and from each chamber 28 through an aperture 36 beneath a shroud 34 in each deflector. Particles may be fed into each chamber 38 through hoppers 58 and pass downwardly into the chambers 13 for upward fluidized passage in contact with the web. The container is formed of two relatively displaceable and separable halves 60, 61 for positioning of the web.
