Abstract
1,027,677. Locking nuts and bolts; anchoring nuts; securing bolts against loss. D. H. CARTER. Feb. 26, 1963, No. 7690/63. Heading F2H. A locking nut 11, whose bearing face 12 may be knurled or serrated and formed with an annular ridge 17, Fig. 2, or 13, Fig. 3, has a finer thread than the main thread 3 or 33 of the bolt which bears a nut 8, Fig. 2, or is formed with an enlargement 31, on which the locking nut 11 is threaded. The bearing face of the nut 8 is first tightened on to the surface of a workpiece 7, Fig. 1 (not shown), or, as shown, the nut with a toughened steel washer 16 welded to it is tightened into a recess 24 in the workpiece 7 so that an annular ridge 21 on the washer displaces material 26, e.g. aluminium alloy, from the workpiece 7 into a groove 27 in the bolt to hold the latter against axial movement. The locking nut 11 is then tightened down to bed on the workpiece 7 and in the embodiment of Fig. 2 to displace material 28 over the washer 16. In Fig. 3, the bolt is first tightened down and the locking nut 11 is then screwed down so that its ridge 13 beds in the workpiece 7.
