Abstract

1,006,102. Locking nuts and bolts; nuts; washers. M. HERMANUS. June 19, 1962 [June 26, 1961], No. 23507/62. Heading F2H. A threaded connection has means for locking the threaded elements comprising a plastically deformable annular washer consisting of a polyamide, copper or lead, and a bolt, nut or washer having a thrust surface which acts directly against the deformable washer and is formed with a spiral groove or closely spaced grooves arranged according to circles which are concentric or eccentric to the axis of the threads. The spiral groove is so disposed that the material of the washer is forced inwardly on tightening of the connection. The groove or grooves are provided on a thrust surface which is flat, frusto-conical or domed. The plastically deformable washer is flat or frustoconical and may be provided with a steel holding ring. A double locking means is shown in Fig. 11. Workpieces 21, 22 are connected by a bolt 11 and nut 1 having a spirally grooved thrust face 4 which acts on the plastically deformable washer 7 which engages the workpiece 21. A further plastically deformable washer 7 bears on the workpiece 22 and engages the grooved thrust surface 4 of a locking washer 5. In a modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the screwed connection comprises a bolt having a conical head there being provided a washer having a conical recess to receive the head of the bolt, the washer having a spirally grooved thrust surface. In the case of concentric grooves being provided on the thrust surface, at least one radial groove is also provided.
