Abstract

1,026,610. Cutting brittle material. OFFICINA MECCANICA MONTOLI VINCENZO. March 20, 1965, No. 11945/65. Heading B5E. A shears for cutting brittle material, such as tiles, comprises a fixed blade 8 and a resilientlyaupported movable blade 9 acted upon by pressure means 41, 39, 36, 27 via a member 32 providing a pivot at the point of balance of the movable blade. The blade 9 is supported by springs 14, 15 carried in a frame 3, 4 and is provided with a member 43 against which the rounded end of an adjustable screw 32, 33 abuts; the screw is carried by a lever 27 pivoted on a frame member 5 and has a surface 34 for co-operation with a cam 36 also pivoted on the frame 5. In operation, a slab of brittle material is placed over the bottom blade and moved against an adjustable stop device 50, the screw 32, 33 then being adjusted to bring the movable blade into contact with the upper surface of the material. A lever 41 is then pulled downwardly so that, via a rod 39 and cam 35, the blade is forced against the material to sever it; the lever may be telescopic in order that the leverage may be adjusted. The adjustable stop device 50 is clamped to a support 21 and is provided with a rubber stop 65, Fig. 5 (not shown), movable over a scale 55; the stop is fixed to a hinge 59 so that it may be pivoted clear of the scale.
