In a clicking press comprising a bed 10 supporting a workpiece 20 on which a cutting die 18 is placed and a swinging beam 16 secured to a post 12 mounted upon a spindle 14 connected to a fluid-pressure piston-and-cylinder device 50, 52 for moving the beam downwardly upon the cutting die to force its cutting edge portion through the workpiece, the piston-and-cylinderdevice is controlled by a valve 146, Fig. 6, which, on actuation of a spring-influenced starting handle 132 on the beam, is arranged to bring about downward movement of the beam and when the cutting edge portion of the die has penetrated the workpiece to a predetermined distance, a split collar 74 on the spindle 14 engages a roller 256 on an arm carried by one end of a pivotally-mounted spring-influenced rocking lever 218 provided at its other end with a rod 234 on which is adjustably mounted a sleeve 236 which actuates a switch 216 included in an electric circuit controlling the valve 146, the arrangement being such that when the switch 216 is actuated the valve 146 is moved to bring about cessation of the downward movement of the beam followed by an upward movement thereof. By adjusting the sleeve 236 on the rod 234, the lower limit of the stroke of the beam is adjusted thereby enabling cutting dies of different depths to be used. The spindle 14 is connected to the post 12 through the intermediary of a screw-threaded hollow sleeve 66, Fig. 3, which is adjustable, to adjust the upper limit of the stroke of the beam, by means of a hand wheel 86 carrying a hexagonal rod 88 extending through a hexagonal opening 90 in the upper end of the sleeve 66. The handle 132 may be depressed to close a switch 210 or, if it is desired to use a two-hand safety control, one or other of two buttons 212 is pressed with one hand to close a switch 214 in series with a switch 208 which is closed by depressing the handle 132 with the other hand.
