A microtome for cutting thin slices has means for automatically separating the specimen holder and knife after each cutting stroke so that the specimen holder and specimen do not make contact during the return stroke. The microtome may comprise a fixed knife 2, and a specimen holder 1 mounted on a frame 3 pivoted on knife edges 9 of a pair of fulcrum struts 7 held in V-shaped notches 10. The specimen holder is reciprocated for cutting and return strokes by a linkage 12 on a cranked disc 13; disc 13 has a cammed surface 31 which engages a follower roller 32 on a rocker 33 thus, via shafts 36, 19 or (54), arms 24 attached to struts 7 and frame 3, causes the specimen holder to move longitudinally away from the knife edge during the return stroke. The specimen hold may be fed into the path of knife 2 by a pawl 17 engaging a ratchet 16 effecting downward movement of screw-threaded shaft 19 which is converted to lateral movement of holder 2 by arms 24, struts 7 and frame 3, the amount of lateral movement is set by a cam 28. In alternative embodiments, the specimen holder may be fed by continually heating frame 3 and for the rocker 33 may be used to pivot knife 2 away from specimen holder.
