Abstract
844,260. Microtomes. CAMBRIDGE INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. May 23, 1958 [July 29, 1957], No. 23994/57. Class 97(1) In a microtome of the rocking arm type the specimen-carrying member is laterally movable on the rocking arm so that on the return stroke the specimen may be moved clear of the cutting knife. As shown in Fig. 2, the specimen i is carried by a chuck a supported on an armature b carried by a flexible strip c, clamped between a block d and a member e, secured to the usual rocking arm. An electromagnet g is energised during the cutting stroke to hold the armature b in the position shown, and at the end of the cutting stroke is de-energised so that the armature b is moved laterally by a spring h. A modified arrangement is described, in which the specimen-carrying member is moved laterally at the end of the cutting stroke by a plunger actuated by a cam carried by a rod rotatable within the rocking arm.
