Abstract
862,412. Microtomes. L.K.B.-PRODUKTERFABRIKSAKTIEBOLAG. Sept. 3, 1959 [Sept. 10, 1958], No. 30111/59. Class 97(1) In a microtome the specimen block is attached to the end of a bar which is oscillated up and down (the cutting operation taking place on the downward movement), the knife edge and the specimen bar being attached to a common base which is elastically deformed on the upward movement of said bar so as to move the knife edge out of the path of the bar. As shown a specimen 14 is held in a holder 15 which is fixed to an arcuate bar (centre of curvature at 14) which is slidable in a groove in a bar 26 rotatable about a pin 27 which in turn is hingedly connected to a bar 11. The bar 11 is heated by a bifilar element 18 to feed the specimen and may be cooled by passing air through a tube 23 channels 19, 20 and the space between the rod and an insulating jacket 21. The bar is made to oscillate by means of an electromagnetic driving device 12 and a lifting cord 42. The glass knife 31 is fixed to a holder by a screw 32 the holder being arranged so as to be slidable in an arcuate groove, the centre of which is on the knife edge, slidable in a path parallel to the axis of the rod 11 and rotatable about a horizontal axis which is perpendicular to the axis of the rod and is mounted on a slide 66 movable on one end of a base 10, the rod 11 being attached to the other end by a leaf spring 17. The base 10 is made of a magnetically susceptable material so that the end 10a (and therefore the knife 31) can be moved downwards intermittently by electromagnets 58. These electromagnets and the device 12 are controlled electronically (a circuit is given). The knife itself may be fed by means of a spring 62 (the tension of which is controlled by a hand operated screw 63)' which exerts a linear force on one arm of a lever 61 which is attached at 60 to the plate 10a so that an upward arcuate movement of the knife is obtained.
