A mechanical actuator for a selectable punch has a flexure member which upon being flexed against a stop transmits an output motion in the direction of its longitudinal dimension, the stop providing a concave back-up support for the flexure member along its length. In one form, punches 10, 11, Fig. 2, are actuated by interposers in the form of leaf springs of magnetic material which in a rest position are in contact with a bail 22 but are moved into contact with the surfaces 36, 38 of limit guides 32, 34 when electromagnets are energized. The bail is formed with a stripper 30 which eng ages stepped portions 18, 20 on the punches to move the punches upwardly after the punching operation. In a modification, the bail comprises vertical and transverse members 74, 72, Fig. 5, the member 74 clamping a leaf spring 70 secured to an extension 68 of a housing 64 surrounding a bushing 62 in which a powerdriven shaft 60 is eccentrically mounted. The lower portion of the member 74 terminates in a stripper 30. The member 72 has means for clamping thereto two groups of three flexures, i.e. the limit guides 32, 34, the interposer springs 40, 42 and a pair of bail guides 76, 78. The assembled actuator is supported by springs 80, 82 clamped to a fixed support 86. Instead of normally de-energized magnets, permanent magnets may be employed with bucking coils adapted to selectively provide an opposing magnetic field when punching is desired. The limit guides and the bail may be held stationary.
