Abstract

1481297 Electromagnets PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 March 1976 [7 March 1975] 08691/76 Heading H1P An electromagnet for a matrix printer (Fig. 1) comprises two hollow cylindrical poleshoes 1, 3 coaxially aligned and of magnetizable material separated by an intermediate non-magnetic coaxial ring 5 of e.g. brass, all held in fixed spatial relationship by a cylindrical thermoplastic cylindrical connecting member 7 together with an excitation coil 9 on the member 7 as a former. Cylindrical armature 11 is slidable within the poleshoes for downward displacement on energization against restoring spring 13. A non-magnetic support of the armature comprises a cylindrical central portion 17 between flanges 19, 21 with magnetic cylinder 23 carried by the annulus; the flanges serving as guides within the poleshoes. On de-energization the armature is biased by spring 13 against cylindrical abutment 25 and recording pin 27 is carried by, e.g. brass holder 29 of the armature. Flange 21 has a dependent flexible skirt 31 into which holder 29 is snapped. Circumferential grooves 35, 37 of poleshoes 1, 3 anchor member 7 of e.g. GRP which is moulded in position the coil being moulded in or subsequently wound. PTFE or polyisomerates may be used for the armature support which is longitudinally grooved to collect extraneous particles. The entire armature may be of magnetizable material.
