Abstract
1,025,448. Transformers. ROBERTSHAW CONTROLS CO. March 12, 1963 [March 12, 1962], No. 9780/63. Heading H1T. [Also in Division F2] In an inductive plug-and-socket connector for a pilot's, diver's &c. helmet or a bathysphere a number of magnetic half cores 14, 16 (Fig. 1) are mounted in the plug member 12, complementary half cores 15, 17 being mounted in the socket member 13 so that when the plug and socket are fully engaged the ends of the half cores in the plug are closely adjacent to the ends of the complementary half cores in the socket and provide inductive coupling between windings 21, 21<SP>1</SP> and 22, 22<SP>1</SP> on the half cores and hence between leads 18, 19 and the helmet &c., earphones and microphones. The plug member 12 may be locked in socket member 13 by a bail 29, hook 28 and locking lever 30 so that an air-tight connection is made from oxygen intake tube 10 to tube 11 supplying the helmet or bathysphere. If two of the transformer arrangements are close together they may be arranged in perpendicular planes to avoid crosscoupling. The wound transformer core halves may be potted in plastic blocks 23, 24 with their end surfaces beneath the potting material so that non-magnetic gaps exist when the core halves are in register. The microphones may be of the dynamic or carbon button type. In another arrangement suitable for a diver's or radiation monitor's helmet 49 (Fig. 3, not shown) the plug 42 may be cylindrical with the wound transformer half cores arranged at opposite sides and at its end to minimize crosscoupling between their circuits, key 46 ensuring correct registration with the socket member 48. Caps 55, 56 retain the plug 42 in socket 48.
