Abstract

1,024,846. I.C. engine valve gear. F. FORNELLI. April 3, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962], No. 13267/63. Heading F1B. In a device for adjusting I.C. engine valve timing gear in dependence on engine speed a first chain wheel 9 acted on by a piston/cylinder device 13 and a second chain wheel supported resiliently on a stem 10 engage opposite sections of the valve gear driving chain 5. Chain wheels 6, 7 driving valve camshafts are driven from the crankshaft by chain wheel 1, chain 2, intermediate chain wheels 3, 4 and chain 5. Cylinder 13 is connected to the engine lubrication system so that with increasing engine speed chain wheel 9 acts to lengthen the section of chain 5 between chain wheels 7 and 4 whilst tie-rod 12 moves chain wheel 8 against spring 14 to allow corresponding shortening of the opposite section of chain 5. In modifications a viscosity-sensitive valve is arranged in the oil circuit, the oil circuit is independent of the main circuit, tie rod 12 is omitted or spring 14 is replaced by a compressed gas cylinder. In another embodiment the device is applied to a single camshaft which acts through tappets and rocker arms on the valve stems. In a further embodiment two cam-shafts are driven by independent chains, a single piston/ cylinder device acts through two separate chain wheels on one section of each chain, whilst independent resiliently mounted chain wheels act on the opposite section of each chain.
