Abstract

1,024,350. Plate-type heat exchanger. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 18, 1964 [Feb. 27, 1963], No. 6761/64. Heading F4S. In a heat-exchanger comprising a stack of hollow plate elements 12, each element comprises a pair of identical plates 22, 23, each flanged around part only of its periphery such that when the two plates of an element are placed together face-to-face the flange periphery of one plate engages on the unflanged parts of the periphery of the other plate. The flanges may, as shown at 32, 32a, extend from midway along one side of the plate and around the end of the plate to the mid-point of the other side of the plate. Alternatively, the flange may be in spaced lengths around the plate periphery, or along one side only of the plate. Each hollow plate element has a chamber 26, Fig. 3 (not shown), at each end formed from the dished portions 22a, 23a of plates 22, 23. Said chambers are fluidly connected by elongated passages 30 and ribs 29 may be used to provide resistance to flexing, Fig. 4 (not shown). Each dished portion 22a, 23a has an aperture 20 and one aperture of each plate has a flanged rim 20a which locates in a complementary unfianged aperture 20 in an adjacent element to position said elements and to assist in stacking them without the need for supporting apparatus. As in Fig. 1 (not shown), secondary radiating surfaces 18 may be included between the heat exchange elements, which are fluidly interconnected by means of the apertures 20
