Abstract
1,023,620. Column heat exchangers. O. MONTZ. Nov. 4, 1964 [Nov. 7, 1963], No. 45011/64. Heading B1R. A plate column heat/mass exchanger comprises a hollow vertical column K containing spaced apart horizontally arranged trays B, made of resilient material e.g. copper, steel, plastics, whose peripheries comprise a plurality of closely spaced radially downwardly curved tongues 2 separated by slits 1 which bear against the wall of the column thereby supporting the trays by friction ; ascending gas or vapour in the column forces its way up between the slits and holds the downwardly flowing liquid on the tray at a height of a few millimetres, while liquid constantly flows from one tray to another as a thin film down the inner wall of the column. Radial slots 3 may be provided in an annular region of the trays through which no liquid passes but ascending gas or vapour passing through then is set in rotational motion and sets up turbulence in the liquid on the tray. Trays may be joined by thin wires 5 to facilitate extraction of the trays from the columns. A plurality of columns may be arranged in an outer shell and the outer walls of the columns heated or cooled.
