Abstract

1386534 Air-cooled heat exchangers; cooling towers BALCKE-DURR AG 17 May 1973 [26 Aug 1972] 23463/73 Headings F4S and F4K In a cooling tower used for cooling liquids or condensing vapours passed through a plurality of radially spaced apart Groups I-IV of heat exchange elements 3 concentrically arranged within a circular casing 1 above one or more air inlet apertures, the height of the heat exchange elements 3 decreases in the radial direction from the periphery to the centre of the tower. The height may either decrease in stepwise fashion from group to group, see left hand side of Fig. 1, or continuously, see right hand side of Fig. 1. Each element 3 comprises a wall 6 of heat exchange tubes joined to a guide wall 8 to define an inverted V-shaped structure; the wall 6 of tubes may be arranged obliquely, as shown, or vertically (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). Preferably the walls 6 in adjacent groups are inclined in the opposite sense with respect to one another. The elements, which as shown are supported on struts 5, may be disposed horizontally or be slightly inclined downwardly towards the centre of the tower. The "dry" heat exchange elements 3, may be arranged in a tower with "wet" heat exchange elements in the form of trickle plates (10, Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), sector-shaped regions of dry elements alternating with sector-shaped regions of wet elements.
