Abstract

1,023,470. Treating tobacco. G. H. BOWEN Ltd., and D. MAGUIRE. Feb. 12, 1965 [Dec. 7, 1963], No. 48398/63. Heading A2C. Hogsheads, bales and the like of tobacco are treated with moist air streams so that successive particular surface layers of leaves are both moistened and loosened. Hogsheads 15 are fed by a conveyer 16 into a chamber 10 where the leading edges of the hogsheads are acted upon by moist air streams from sprays 11 and 12, the moist air being kept in circulation by fans 13. Loosening of the layers of leaves, which fall on to a perforated or slatted conveyer 20, may be assisted by a conveyer 17 having tines 18. The moistened and loosened tobacco is delivered to a conveyer 24. In a second embodiment, the conveyer 17 is omitted and the loosened layers fall on to an upwardly inclined conveyer with rakes interposed between the conveyers 16 and 20, (Fig. 3, not shown).
