Abstract

Adhesive compositions comprise a water dispersion of a vinyl ester copolymer, an inert inorganic filler and a modifier consisting of a blend of bentonite clay and a celulose ether. Specified copolymers are copolymers of vinyl acetate with vinyl propionate, vinyl caprate, vinyl acrylate and vinyl 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, which may be used together with polyvinyl acetate. Specified fillers are silica, talc, barytes, gypsum, felspar, clay and whiting. Specified cellulose ethers are methyl, hydroxyethyl methyl, hydroxypropyl methyl, and hydroxyethyl cellulose. The compositions may be used for bonding ceramic tiles to brick, stone, plastr, concrete, wood, wood based boards, glazed bricks and tiles. Examples describe compositions comprising water, polyvinyl acetate, bentonite clay and (I) a vinyl acetate-vinyl 2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer, gypsum, silica and methyl cellulose; (II) a vinyl acetate-vinyl 2-ethylhexyl acreylate copolymer, felspar and methyl cellulose; and (III) a vinyl acetatevinyl 2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer, gypsum and hydroxy-ethyl cellulose.
