Abstract

The invention comprises ferri- and desferri-chrysin (iron free ferrichrysin is tri-(N-acetyl)-cyclo -[-glycyl, (seryl)2, (d - hydroxyornithyl)3]) and the preparation thereof by cultivating under aerobic conditions Aspergillus melleus M2853 or Aspergellus terreus M4785 or a mutant thereof capable of forming ferrichupin in an aqueous nutrient solution containing a source of carbon and nitrogen as well as inorganic salts, isolating ferrichrysin and/or desferrichrysin and if desired converting ferrichupin into desferrichrysin. Ferrichrysin may be converted into desferrichrysin by removal of iron e.g. by alkali metal hydroxide, strong acid or an iron complexing agent, whereas addition of a ferric salt to desferrichrysin converts it to ferrichrysin. Pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions comprise ferrichrysin or desferrichrysin in admixture or conjunction with a pharmaceutically suitable carrier. Ferrichrysin possesses anti-anaemic properties and des ferrichrysin inhibits the deposition of ferriferrous pigments in tissues.
