Abstract

A high strength cylindrical member e.g. a rotor for an ultracentrifuge is centrifugally cast from a material including elongated particulate matter of greater density than the remainder of the material so as to orientate said particulate matter with its long dimension lying substantially normal to the radii of the rotating mould. The casting material, e.g. Al, Ti, thermosetting plastics, chemically settable materials such as epoxy set by a catalyst, together with elongate particulate matter such as chopped glass fibre, or iron filings, is fed into the centrifugal mould 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), in the gap between the mould wall and a rotatable mandrel 12, and the particles 27 aligned as shown in Fig. 4 (not shown) by applying a drag to the inner boundary of the melt by differential rotation of the mould and mandrel, the material then solidifying by cooling, heating or chemical reaction. A slot 24 in the mandrel ensures a sufficient feed of metal to provide a full thickness to the casting wall. Magnetic or electrostatic forces may assist the alignment of the particles. The elongated particles may simply be long molecules of the casting material.
