Abstract

1,195,206. Fuel material. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 12 Oct., 1967 [25 Oct., 1966], No. 47848/66. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel body comprises an agglomeration of fuel particles each with a fission product retaining coating and maintained in adherence with one another by synthetic resin applied as an overcoating on the fission product retaining coatings. In one method of making such a fuel body, the fuel particles after having been given the fission product retaining coating are tumbled in a mixture of a carbonizable thermosetting resin in powder form and graphite powder until they acquire an outer layer of the powder. The particles are then poured into a long cylindrical mould and compressed either by means of a plunger or by vibration compaction, after which the mould is zone heated to the curing temperature of the resin, the zone moving progressively from one end of the mould to the other at such a speed as to leave cured resin behind it. Finally, the resin is carbonized. The resulting product has a uniform high density and may have a length/diameter ratio of 24/1 or more. It may be removed from its mould cavity or, in the case of graphite mould, remain in situ in the mould and be used directly as a nuclear fuel element, the graphite forming a carrier for the fuel agglomerate.
