Abstract

1,086,719. Processing radioactive waste. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 7, 1964 [Oct. 17, 1963], No. 40956/64. Heading B1D. [Also in Division G6] Solid products are produced from liquid suspensions of radioactive waste material by a continuous process in the first stage 1 of which the particles in suspension are coated with bitumen, in the second stage 2 liquid is separated from the particles by increasing the pressure in the direction of flow of the material, and in the third stage 3 the product is dried. Each stage is carried out in a heated cylinder containing two rotating helical blades, and the three cylinders are connected in series. In the coating device the pitch of the blades 4, 5 may vary to create pressure zones. The separating device has an exit 20 of smaller diameter than the entry 18 and the pitch of the blades near the exit is reduced so as to press out liquid which is withdrawn at 22. The drying device has orifices 32, 33 for the removal of gases and vapours.
