Abstract

Ceramic objects may be moulded effectively and economically by casting into a mould formed of Al, Cu or graphite or made of some non-conductive material such as wax or synthetic resin coated with a conducting material. The ceramic slip may be constituted of 50-91% by weight of particles of 0.015-4.76mm diameter of SiO2, Al2O3, Cr2O3 and other non-metallic compounds of such sort dispersed in 50-9% weakly conducting polarised organic liquids and water. A potential of 10-800 volts is applied across the slip using the metal conducting mould as negative electrode and a conical Al rod, coated with a release agent and inserted in the centre of the mould cavity, as positive electrode. The passage of current through the slip causes the ceramic compound to flow to the mould walls concentrating the liquid agent near the positive electrode. If the mould has a simple contour consisting of straight lines and curves, it may be withdrawn readily from the mould. The moulded object has a shrinkage of about 0.5%.
