Abstract

870,573. Moulding magnets. LEYMAN CORPORATION. April 3, 1959, No. 11409/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXV] A magnet is made by suspending ferrite particles in a liquid whose viscosity is not greater than that of water, applying a magnetic field to orientate the particles, separating the liquid from the particles, and causing a matrix material to solidify around the particles. In one method, (Fig. 1) a suspension of ferrite particles in acetone is introduced into a non magnetic die 2 provided with movable punches 3, 4 which act as pole pieces and provide the magnetic field. The punches move together to expel the acetone whilst the field is applied and the remaining mass is removed and impregnated with molten chlorinated naphthalene which on cooling forms a solid matrix. The mass is then subjected to an ionising operation in the die under moderate temperature and pressure and allowed to cool. In a second method a die with a cavity 5, Fig. 3, is utilised, the matrix material being forced through ports 6, 7. A high frequency electrode surrounding the die may be employed to set a matrix material of the thermosetting type. In a further method a co-dispersion of ferrite particles and matrix material, e.g. lead ferrite and polystyrene dispersed in alcohol is compressed in a die in a magnetic field and heated to 400‹F. when the residual alcohol evaporates and the polystyrene softens. The mass is then further compressed and cooled. The ferrite material may be lead, barium or strontium ferrite and may be prepared by specified methods to yield single domain particles having a size between ¢ and 10. The dispersion liquid may be water, alcohol, acetone, benzene, xylene or toluene and the matrix material may be epoxy, acrylic, polyester or phenolic resins, ureaformaldehyde cellulose acetate, polyethylene or metal.
