Abstract

1,020,532. Spin driers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 8, 1963 [March 19, 1962], No. 10461/62. Heading F4G. The perforated basket 1, Fig. 1, and an extraction pump 30 of a spin drier and spin-rinser are driven from a common uni-directional motor 10 having a clutch between the motor and basket so that initially the pump is operated to relieve the load on the basket due to water therein and water between the basket and a surrounding water container 2 to a predetermined level before drive to the basket is taken up. The clutch of this embodiment is a centrifugal clutch which is responsive to the speed of the motor and which comprises a casing 19 wherein two centrifugally operated clutch shoes, Fig. 2 (not shown) pivot on pins 24 on a bracket 23 secured to a sleeve bearing 20 about the basket drive-shaft 3. The shoes are held off the clutch casing by springs until the speed of the shaft is sufficient to overcome the spring pressure, but restraint of the basket by a load of water therein or thereabout causes clutch slipping until sufficient water has been extracted by the pump. The shaft 31 for an impeller 32 of the pump carries a cooling fan 33 for the motor and is flexibly driven from the motor shaft 3 by a spring member 34. The drier is braked by a shoe co-operating with the casing 19 and operated through a Bowden cable from the drier lid. In another embodiment the centrifugal clutch is replaced by a powder clutch and a separate brake drum is utilized.
