Abstract
Successive nickel and chromium coatings are electrodeposited by a method in which the (first) nickel coating (or upper part thereof) and/or the chromium coating are/is deposited from an emulsion bath containing in colloidal suspension an electrically non-conductive liquid. An emulsion chromium bath may be formed with oils, waxes, resin-forming liquids and emulsifying agents which do not oxidize under conditions in the chromium bath, preferably with halofluoro carbon oils or waxes emulsified with a water-soluble fluoro carboxylic or sulphonic acid; e.g. a bath containing 300 g./1. CrO3, 3 g./1. H2SO4, 10 g./1. C1(CF2CFC1)6C1 and 4 g./1. fluoro laurylsulphonic acid. A bright nickel bath may contain 300 g./1. NiSO4, 60 g./1. NiCl2, 40 g./1. H3BO3, 100 mg./1. butyndiol, 2 g./1. o-toluene sulphonimide and 2 mg./1. Na alkyl sulphonate; 8 ml./1. paraffin and 1 g./1. Na lauryl sulphate may be further added to form an emulsion nickel bath.
