Abstract
1,019,680. Nubbed yarns. KENDALL CO. Jan. 4, 1965 [June 12,1964], No. 303/65. Headings D1D, D1F and D1W. A wrapped nubbed yarn is produced by continuously overfeeding a core strand into a vortex cell containing a whirling mass of fluid in a direc - tion normal to the whirling mass, and continuously overfeeding at least one wrapping strand to the cell in a direction tangential to the whirling mass of fluid, thereby to cause the wrapping strand to be wrapped in the form of double-back loops around the core strand, and the thus-wrapped overfed core strand to be twisted into a spaced-apart series of twisted loops. Fig. 1 shows one of the nubs of the nubbed yarn, while Fig. 9 shows the twisted core strand in the nub, the covering strand being omitted for clarity. The vortex cell comprises quartz or glass tubing 50, a core strand inlet piece 62 of glass, an outlet tubing 60 of ceramic, brass, or glass, and rubber gaskets 56, 58. There is a fluid inlet 28 and a wrapping strand inlet 29. The core or wrapping strands may be multi-filament yarns of nylon, cellulose acetate, glass, rubber, spandex, or stretch strands of bulked or crimped type. Alternatively staple fibre yarns or plied yarns may be used.
