Abstract
1,019,217. Corrugating; stamping. ROHR CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1964 [Oct. 7, 1963], No. 6046/64. Headings B3E and B3Q. A punch press for corrugating metallic ribbon, e.g. of stainless steel, comprises opposing die means respectively comprising yieldably extended die portions for bending and forming a first uniformed portion of the ribbon therebetween to form a first portion of a corrugation in the ribbon as one of the die portions moves yieldably to bottom on its die means and for forming a second uniformed portion of the ribbon thereby to form the remaining portion of said corrugation as the other die portion moves yieldably to bottom on its die means. A die set comprises a pair of similar die assemblies 19, 20 each comprising a forming die member 23 having one tooth 24 within which is slidably mounted a toothed flanged die member 25 loaded by a spring 38. The spring loading of the lower member 25 is greater than that of the upper member 25. In operation ribbon 27 is located, by two corrugations previously formed therein, on the lower die 25 and yieldably clamped thereto by the upper member 25. Continued lowering causes the upper member to be depressed into contact with a die support 11 and one wall of a new corrugation to be formed against the tooth 24. Further lowering depresses the lower member into contact with a support 10 to completely close the dies and form a second wall of the corrugation. The ribbon is intermittently advanced one corrugation between each pressing cycle. Air pressure means may be used in place of the springs 38. Corrugations having fluted side walls may be produced by using fluted toothed dies.
