Abstract

1,203,991. Angular bending; corrugating. PRECISION PRESSWORK CO. Ltd. 9 Aug., 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24632/67. Heading B3E. A method of bending or corrugating a sheetmetal blank comprises forcing the blank with a punch against two spaced-apart portions provided by two separate blocks of resilient material, e.g. polyurethane, to bend the metal at predetermined positions while leaving the metal unsupported by resilient material between said positions at least during the initial part of the bending or corrugating. A press tool for carrying out the method comprises two separate rods 15 of, e.g., polyurethane, mounted in adjustable holders 14 slidable in a bolster 10. A punch 12 provided with a head 13 is mounted for vertical reciprocation. The blank 24 is centrally supported on a spring-loaded plate 22 which is depressed as the punch descends and presses the blank into the resilient rods to form the flanges 25, 27. In a modification the rods are of square cross-section with the side facing the punch inclined to the vertical axis. For forming corrugations in a blank 47 (Fig. 4) spaced rods of polyurethane are provided in the punch and in the lower die. The initially flat blank is supported on anvils 51 and the base of the corrugation is engaged by a pressure-pad 50. In another modification the resilient rods are provided with longitudinal V-grooves (Fig. 6) of different sizes the rods being rotatable to present the required groove towards the punch. Clearance volumes are arranged between the resilient rods and their holders to allow for expansion. For forming a V-bend in a metal sheet a punch 64 (Fig. 5) co-operates with two cylindrical polyurethane blocks 61 located in a bed 62.
