Abstract
1,017,964. Enlarging ships' hulls. ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. March 5, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 8683/63. Heading B7S. A method of enlarging a ship to increase its depth, or depth and width includes the steps of placing floats 3 on either side of ship's hull 2, ballasting the floats and/or hull to bring the upper ends of the floats level with the upper deck 5 and fixing them to the hull at 9, cutting the hull between the upper deck and the water level to form two parts which provide an upper hull part and a lower hull part, discharging ballast from the floats to raise them and the attached upper hull, and finally attaching the lower hull part to the floats at 11. An alternative method, comprises placing the floats on either side of the hull as before only with the ship in a dock, supporting the floats on blocks on the dock floor while fixing the upper ends of the floats to the hull adjacent the upper deck as before, cutting the hull between the upper deck and the water level and allowing the lower hull to sink by pumping water out of the dock, and finally securing the lower hull to the floats as before.
