Abstract
1,016,627. Melt-spinning apparatus. N.V. ONDERZOEKINGSSINSTATEUST RESEARCH. Feb. 26, 1964, [Feb. 27, 1963, No. 8055/64. Division B5B. In melt-spinning apparatus of the type comprising a spinneret provided with one or more groups of spinning orifices below which is a cooling chamber whose front wall 1, Fig. 1, and two side walls 2, 3 perpendicular thereto extend parallel to the direction of spinning and at least partially surround the bundle or bundles of filaments, said front wall being provided with openings connecting with an air supply system (A = direction of air-flow), there is provided on both sides of the or each group of spinning orifices, i.e. on the sides facing the side walls of the cooling chamber, a resistance member 5, 6 so positioned during normal spinning that the distance therefrom to said sides of the corresponding group of spinning orifices 4 is less than five times the smallest distance between the successive spinning orifices, preferably between once and twice said smallest distance. The resistance members which may be movable from the spinning in position (dashline) to a spinning position (solid line) suitably comprise partitions, which may be attached to the front wall (e.g. a screen pack) of the cooling chamber so that they are sealed thereto. Desirably, the outer circumference of a group of spinning orifices forms as shown a rectangle whose long sides are parallel to the front wall of the cooling chamber and in which the partitions extend substantially parallel to the short sides of the rectangle and the orifices 11 (Fig. 2), so arranged that on any straight line 12 extending over the spinneret in the direction of air flow (arrows A) there is only one spinning orifice. In a modified apparatus (Fig. 3), each group of spinning orifices 13, 14, 15 is located between two separate resistance members 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 which may be moved in pairs in a direction approximately transverse to the direction of air flow (arrows A) such that when any pair of members is moved towards the group of spinning orifices between them they are moved into a spinning position, and when they are moved in the opposite direction they are moved into a spinning-in position. The two movable outer partitions 16, 21 whilst in a spinning-in position may be placed practically against the side walls 2, 3 of the cooling chamber. Preferably, the distance from the two movable outer partitions whilst in a spinning-in position to the sides of the corresponding group or groups of spinning orifices is at least ten times the distance between the successive spinning orifices in a group. The distance from the points at which the resistance members are in the spinning position to the sides of the corresponding group of spinning orifices may be adjustable, and the partitions may extend in the direction of air flow over a shorter distance than the side walls of the cooling chamber. The construction of the resistance members is such that they reduce the difference between the rate of air flow at the side and in the middle of the bundle or bundles of filaments to a permissible value, and assist in the production of filaments of uniform denier. The resistance members may consist of a number of steel wires having approximately the same dimensions as the synthetic filaments to be obtained. The outer resistance members may also be formed by the side walls of the cooling chamber (Fig. 4).
