Description
Screen, Said iiltration apparatus containing at least tw Separate 'and independent mter chambers, each individual y connected t0 a Source of polymer and each communi cating by a plurality of conduits With the distribution area above said screen, and means to su y polymer at Sub- Stantialy the sanle volume Tate to each of the mter cham bers 2' T'he apparatus of claim 1 in Which the spinneret 0riceS are arranged in less than ten uniforn1ly spaced parallel TOWS of uniformly spaced ormces, each row being staggered relative to the adjacent rows, With the rows forming a Substantialy rectangulaf pattern having a length at least ve times its width.
3. A rocess for spinning a molten organic berf0rn1 ing polyn1eric material into a large nun1ber of lanentS fron^1 a single Spinneret which conlprises continuously Separating the polyner i11to portions, sinlultaneously and separately mtering each of the portions at susbtantiany the sanle volune rate, further Separating each of the nltered portions into a plurality of smaner portions and transmitting these Smaller portions in the form of streams to a comn1on distribution zone Separating the polynler aS it leaves the distribution zone into at least 40 Separate parauel polymer streams Which form a substantiauy rectangular pattem in cross Section having a length at east three tinles its Width, Shaping each of these Streams into a ilaInent, to produce a ilament bundle having a Substantially rectangular transverse cross section, and quenching the ffeshly formed maments by passing through a mass of air moving perpendicular to the maments and per pendicular to the longer axis of the mament bundle cross section 4. T'he process of claim 3 in which the polyn1eric material is p01y(hexamethylene adipamide).
