Abstract

Carbon or graphite with a porosity of about 95% is produced by pyrolizing a plastics foam prepared from a cross-linked thermosetting polymer in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature first to produce elemental carbon and then if necessary to 2000 DEG C. to produce graphite. The polymer may be characterized by cyclic groups consisting of 5- or 6-membered rings, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde, phenol-benzaldehyde and resorcinol-formaldehyde resins, or resins based on furfuryl alcohol or furfuryl aldehyde. The plastics foam may be pyrolized embedded in a carbon grist or in a closed container in a stream of inert gas and it may be in the form of shaped pieces. The temperature may be raised at about 10 DEG C. per hour and the size of the bodies may be at least 20 x 10 x 4 inches. Chemically inert powders may be added to the liquid polymer to modify the properties of the carbonized product.
