1454622 Silicon carbide FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 29 July 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 33360/74 Heading C1A A silicon carbide article is made by the steps of (1) mixing 70 to 83% by weight of SiC particles with 30 to 17% by weight of a thermosetting polymeric material which originally contains aromatic components, e.g. phenol furfural, phenol formaldehyde, polybenzimidazole, phenolic naphthalenediol terpolymer and polyphenylenes, or which produces aromatic components on pyrolysis, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride, (2) preheating the mixture from (1) so that the polymeric material is in the liquid phase and introducing the mixture into a mould and thence developing a uniform constant pressure throughout the mixture to give a continuous matrix of polymeric material throughout the mould, (3) stiffening the mixture in the mould by cross-linking the thermosetting polymeric material to a degree sufficient to allow the moulded article to be removed from the mould without distortion, (4) pyrolysing the moulded article to produce a porous body in which the silicon carbide particles are bonded together by pure carbon and thence cooling the body to room temperature, (5) siliciding the carbon of the porous body by impregnating the body with pure silicon to form a finished article of silicon carbide.
