Abstract

Porous carbon bodies are prepared by packing a mould with an appropriate amount of a particulate water soluble salt, pouring into the mould a resin-forming polymerizable mixture comprising furfural and phenol to surround the salt particles, causing the resin to polymerize in the presence of hydrochloric acid, eluting the salt with water, curing the resin mass at 180 DEG to 200 DEG C. for a week and finally carbonizing the porous resin mass by baking in an inert atmosphere at a rate of temperature rise of 100 DEG C./hour up to 500 DEG C. and 200 DEG C./ hour from 500 DEG C. to 1200 DEG C.
